The Dream Recorder

I will soon be posting full documentation on my website.

The Dream Recorder is a system that allows inquisitive people to keep abstract, visual records of their dreams, or hypnograms. Hypnograms are computer generated three-dimensional drawings that have the potential to reveal emotional arousals provoked by the user’s brain during dreaming, constantly monitoring the user’s heart and hand sweat glands. This system is complemented by a nightmare alert device created to interrupt nightmares through the generation of sound. The Dream Recorder is a system especially created for those who want to keep tangible, legitimate records of their dreams, or for the curious who wish to know more about the life they live asleep.

Beyond the particular functions that define the Dream Recorder as a specific application, this project is generically an emotion-responsive system. This means that it is able to respond to specific emotional states of its user in real time. Thus, the essence of the Dream Recorder does not rely completely on its capability to capture dreams in a digital form; it also relies on its capacity to translate physiological data into emotional data, in order to give meaningful feedback to the user. This project is about the possibilities that digitally processing physiological input offers, and its potential to create interesting, day-to-day products that interact with users at levels that allow them to discover unknown aspects about themselves.

  • This sounds like a great idea that I would love to see taken further into development. As a student of magick, I have a firm belief in dreams and their meanings. How many times have you heard people say that they've gone to sleep and had a dream or vision that inspired them or gave them an answer to a question in their life that has been bother them? Dreams are essential parts of ourselves that most people ignore and dismiss without a second thought.

The only thing that worries me about this invention is the nightmare warning. Nightmares are very important in that they bring to our attention something that we need to see or experience, but the only way to really catch our attention is by sheer shock factor. Inner demons (figuratively) or thoughts that we may have buried deep in our subconcious need to be faced in order to become a better person and the shock of nightmares forces us to pay attention and face these things.

Anyway, keep up the great work! I'm definitely bookmarking your page to keep an eye on the development of this project.
