I have started a blog to record my progress

Hertzian Tales

Given my technical background, this has been one of the most difficult readings for me. I am not entirely sure if I understood what Mr. Dunne had to say and his design approach behind packages, fusion, dematerialization, and juxtaposition. To me, the success of a design lies in its approachability, availability and purpose. This article has made me think and question my ideas. However, I incline to hold on to my ideas but I am curious to find out what my classmates think about this article.

Things that make us smart

The power of representation is the key in any kind of information transfer. The example of friend explaining a dog crossing the road with paper clip shows how the form of representation enriches the information passed along. The way represented and representing worlds were explained was quite interesting and I learned a lot from it which could be used in interface design.

Different types of representation works for different set of people. So, you need to design your representation according to your user demographics.

Why we need things - Csikszenmihalyi

This article gave me an insight into today's objects and the materialistic world. I am not sure if I agree with all that Mr. Csikszenmihalyi has to say in this article.

Objects of Power: Yes, certain objects exist in this world and for that matter in some people's houses solely for the status or rank it screams out. How these objects gained that meaning is a good question. It is a question that could only be answered with extensive studies on theory of evolution, historical even archaeological references.
