[SpyLab] 间谍实验室 presented at V2 DEAF 2007.
Spy in the Lab is a long running project that was an idea about 1 1/2 years ago. Thanks to the Spy in the Lab Collaboration Studio during Fall 2006 at Parsons School For Design - Communication Design and Technology it is almost complete!

[Mingle] 混合 is a voyeuristic sound installation that interacts with audio messages left by people in remote locations (other cities and countries). [Mingle] 混合 uses their conversations as fodder for sound experimentation by constructing a sound poem. Simple but elegant red phones are used as the tool for people to listen into the sound poem as well as allowing them to leave their own messages. The sound poem then loops until another is created through new messages. The location of the red phones change from time to time and is flexible as long as there is a connection to the Internet.
All messages left on the red phones are saved to a sound sample database. In the tradition of [SpyLab] 间谍实验室, this database will become public for interested parties and artists to use as fodder for their own sound experiments.
There are three versions of [Mingle] 混合:
[Mingle Local] 混合: This installation is local to a gallery or fixed area and there is no remote features. This is good for closed loop installations where the Internet is not available. The red phones create a sound poem with just the local messages. (Current)
[Mingle Remote] 混合: This installation is an open loop experiment. Red phones are placed in different locations around the globe. All messages are looped together into a sound poem and played back at all the locations. (Late Spring 2007)
[Mingle VoIP] 混合: This installation incorporates the use of internet telephony software such as Skype to call into the [Mingle] 混合 loop and leave a message along with hearing the sound poem. (Summer 2007)

Working hard on Not Quite Clear… Have encountered several problems that will be solved in the next few days. Will post code, schematics, bom and notes soon. For now here are some cool pictures.

[It’s A Gas] 这是一个天然气 is one of several pieces [SpyLab] 间谍实验室 will be building in 2007/2008. The project is a collaboration between members of [SpyLab] 间谍实验室 to visualize the similarities and differences of air pollutants, emissions and other environmental factors affecting major metropolitan cities. Using real-time and logged data collected from an array of sensors in New York City and Beijing and other mega cities around the world, the project aims to analyze the changes happening to our global environment and how best to map these changes through dynamic information modeling.
Building off the data and visual interpretations from the summer of 2007, [SpyLab] 间谍实验室 will follow its tradition of evolving the physical manifestation of collecting data. The installation of [It’s A Gas] 这是一个天然气 will consist of several 5 foot by 5 foot clear plexi-glass rooms. A pair of these plexi-rooms will be virtual green houses with vegetation. One as a control of a stable environment and the other that will mimic the emission data collected over the last year. Other pairs of plexi-rooms will realize different environmental control and emission mimicking for gallery participants to experience.

Traveler started out as a collaboration between students from Parsons School of Design (NYC) and students at Beijing’s Tsinghua University.
We built an interactive video installation that involved two stationary bikes. Depending on which bike was peddled faster a video display would switch from a bike ride through NYC to a bike ride in Beijing, music reflecting each city would also play. When the bikes are not peddled the display shows a cubed combo of both.
The front tire of the bikes were rigged to pneumatics, so that when someone was riding the bike the front tire would bounce up and down as if riding down a city street.

[Mingle] 混合 is the first of three pieces [SpyLab] 间谍实验室 is building in 2007. [Mingle] 混合 is a voyeuristically interactive new media sound installation. [Mingle] 混合 eavesdrops on unsuspecting people in Beijing, PRC, New York City, USA and gallery goers. [Mingle] 混合 uses their conversation as fodder for sound experimentation.
Below are links to the original proposal and Flash presentation for [Mingle] 混合. It must be noted that [Mingle] 混合 has changed in physical form and materials. The concept and idea is the same. More to be revealed soon.
[Yacht Club] 游艇俱乐部 was the precursor to [SpyLab] 间谍实验室 and is still going strong. Not Quite Clear is a small piece that has been in the works. Here are a few pictures of the process so far. A detailed description and DYI documentation to come.
