Precedents for Final Project

French company Total Immersion has created D'Fusion which "enables the real-time integration of interactive 3D graphics into live video flows". In other words, point a web cam at some specialized print material and it becomes 'alive' with the internet.

Ideas for final project
Submitted by vpivovarova on Sat, 03/29/2008 - 15:00.After the class discussion I still have two ideas left but they can combined in one project
Main concept
I want to explore interaction between people through the virtual reality 3D installation, but
I am more interested in interaction between artist controlling the piece and the crowd rather then in interaction of people with a stand-alone-piece. It is an idea of a performance tool that will allow to explore an interaction between people in all its richness as oppose to idea of people interacting with pre-programmed computer. Because programming the application for a specific reaction to the publics input will give it only one perspective- the creators perspective, but having a tool used for this purpose can give interaction more depth and make it more creative.
idea #1
Brooklyn Playground
It's a projected 3D virtual playground where kids (young people) can play and interact with dogs (other creatures. Project will be located in the neighborhood with the domination of industrial sector, with less "parks and public spaces for people to socialize (like Bushwick). In this areas people don't have dog playgrounds (and they don't have dogs)like in Manhattan.
The installation will have a dog (maybe more then one)for a person to play with it and with other people.
Idea #2
Taking the new technology to the street
The idea is to use a new technology but give it a meaningful content and take it to the street for people to explore it and try it out.
I'm particularly interested in 3D technology ranging from 3D screens to game engines with real physics.
I'm planning to use it for my thesis project next year, but for this project I just want to try it and get an idea of how the technology works and all the limitations.
For this project I chose to use a 3D screen made with wii remote- a new and very interesting idea. It is open for everyone to use and free. It would be great to set it up on the street for people to see and try it.
Here is the link to the tutorial video:
Head Tracking for Desktop VR Displays using the Wii Remote
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~johnny/projects/wii/
But it's also important to give it a content and meaningful interaction
therefore it could be combined with the first idea.
Technology
Technology I want to use for the final project:
1.wii remote with VR display application
2.Virtools for 3D interaction and simulation
3.Maya for modeling and animating the content
Inspirations
1.Adam Frank's "Shadow" project
http://www.adamfrank.com/shadow/shadow.htm
this project was interesting in terms of interaction with virtual object
2.Myron Krueger's "Live Graffiti"
from the article "Responsive Environments"(1997)
It was really interesting to read about relationship between participants and the artist evolving during the interaction.

Data Visualization: Obituaries and Death Notices
Submitted by vpivovarova on Mon, 02/04/2008 - 23:37.The task was to design a data visualization of information contained in obituaries and death notices, whether they will be taken directly from a newspaper or from internet. The idea is to find something new in the information and show it in the creative way, tell a story with data visualization.
There's specific language used in obituaries and only limited amount of information can be taken from.
Types of information:
- 1. First and last name
- 2. Age
- 3. Date of birth
- 4. Place of birth

Whitney Artport Idea Line
Submitted by vpivovarova on Thu, 01/31/2008 - 19:23.Whitney Artport Idea Line is a truly wonderful thing in my opinion, it's a place where you can find a lot of interesting projects in the exact field you're interested in gathered and sorted by artist, media field and date.
Although a lot of links are broken you can still google the project by name and author. That's how i've found John Maeda's Shiseido Calendars (1997), that he mentioned during his talk in Parsons (for design management department on Fall'07); and, going further, his Concentrics (1995).

Design class- EYEBEAM
Submitted by vpivovarova on Tue, 08/14/2007 - 00:04.I liked source code retrospective a lot but most of all the projects i liked Cory Arcangels "I shot Andy Warhol"
because that was the only truly interactive project there (in my opinion). i liked the way he hacked Nintendo and just put modified chip onto it but doing that he invented something new. but the greatest thing is the humor: you actually shooting Andy Warhol and avoiding to shoot other characters like pope, Colonel Sanders and raper/drug dealer.
i`ve spend some time playing ...and that was a lot of fun actually!
other one that i liked was Jonah Brucker-Cohen`s Police Station

Design class- IA and structure of the firs page of final project website
Submitted by vpivovarova on Mon, 08/13/2007 - 18:03.structure of the page is the same i had for own website
i think it`s simple and usable that way: to have top navigation and left navigation always visible and body content scroll like a chat page
