"It is almost universally felt that when we call a country democratic we are praising it: consequently the defenders of every kind of regime claim that it is a democracy, and fear that they might have to stop using that word if it were tied down to any one meaning. Words of this kind are often used in a consciously dishonest way. That is, the person who uses them has his own private definition, but allows his hearer to think he means something quite different. Statements like Marshal Petain was a true patriot, The Soviet press is the freest in the world, The Catholic Church is opposed to persecution, are almost always made with intent to deceive. Other words used in variable meanings, in most cases more or less dishonestly, are: class, totalitarian, science, progressive, reactionary, bourgeois, equality."
Politics and the English Language
George Orwell - 1946
Project Overview:
I attempt to create a series of short films analyzing and
documenting the use of news broadcast and their influence on forming
an opinion on the general public.
I plan to create a series of short films which look at the use of
propaganda in broadcast news through graphics, narration and sound.
Each film will be four minutes long.
Film I: Will look at the use of motion graphics in
broadcast news and perhaps mimic it, but represent the the reasons
why certain types of graphical representation is used.
early prototype
(quicktime required)
Film II: Will observe the manner of speech and look at how
sound is used, in emphasizing certain facts and to assert emphasis.
Film III: Will mimic the introductory graphics before a
newscast. and demonstrate how a precept is built before the actual
news is (mis)cast.
Film IV: At this point I am leaving this open. Maybe this
will be an amalgamation of the three films above, and will imply a
message through using existing news footage to communicate the
banality of broadcast news. This film may also vary in length.
I will also create an introductory graphic sequence that will be
played before each clip. That would make certain that my films are
properly "branded".
The length of these films is going to be four minutes each. The
reason for this is that each news segment is on an average five
minutes long. But in my films, I will designate the first minute to
graphically communicate what the film is going to be, sort of an
introduction.
