Final Deliverables

Hi all,

Here are the final deliverables:

1. A brief (3-5 page) PDF including images and text presenting your project in a self-contained form. Include a 150 word description of your site and audience, a 150-300 word abstract describing the project, screenshots/images and anything additional you might need to describe the project to an "outsider".

2. Documentation in PDF format of playtests and prototypes (many of you already have this in some form)

3. A complete archive (.zip) of all files, including commented code, presentations, errata associated with your project

These should all be posted on the blog by 3pm December 22nd!

And of course, be ready for the dry run of the presentation next week, and final presentations on the 15th!

C and V

Bhoiwada Interviews

Dear All,

Apologies for the delay in posting these. Deepak sent me these interviews in Marathi and I've summarized the responses to your three questions... Hope they are useful for the lockup intervention. As I mention, these interviews were conducted among the youth in the Naigaum area, around the lockup. The interviewees live in the Spring Mills chawl compound and the Naigaum BDD chawls.

Best,
Vyjayanthi

Mobile Geographies Prototype 1.0

It's here! This prototype is currently on exhibit at the 2nd Annual Exhibition of Art and Science in Beijing, hosted by Tsinghua Unversity. It is a dynamic map with information (in the form of text and moving image) about four important sites in the mill district. Movies embedded in the map are triggered by an SMS message from the user's mobile. They then receive a text message on their phone from someone connected to that site (former millworkers, political activists and theatre-owners) to take with them. Thanks to Neera Adarkar and Meena Menon for use of their book of interviews in the mill area, "100 Voices", to Paul Notzold for technological inspiration, and to MFADT students Orcun Gogus and Becky Heritage for late night help. Created by students and faculty (Colleen Macklin, Vyjayanthi Rao) of the Design and Technology Mobile Geographies course.

**Mobile Geography Students: take a look at the attached on the computer in the Project Room and provide comments aimed at improving the piece here.

Phoenix Mills and Bhoiwada Info

Dear All,

Attached the info on Phoenix - Deepak has filled in the questionnaire we sent him with interviews on site. The history that he starts with is from an interview with a senior journalist - will get you guys the name soon.

Regarding Bhoiwada, a couple of pieces of history that might be interesting. During the colonial period, the Governor of Bombay Presidency was staying in the Haffkine Institute bungalow which is around the lockup area and he was the ex-officio chief of police, running it from the Haffkine Institute bungalow (the institute is one of only virology research institutes in India). The ground opposite the lockup was being used for a lot of famous workers meetings -- another piece of usable information. Naigaon, as the area around the lockup was known, is famous also as the residence of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, who was the leader of the untouchables, whom he called Dalit, a political term used by them as a empowering move - it means "oppressed." Also, Ambedkar was a lawyer trained at Columbia U and he was the framer of the Indian constitution - I believe he lived in the BDD chawls in the Worli area and Colleen has some pictures of those chawls on flikr. I will confirm this absolutely.

the case of the missing ganesh_playtesting

.:THE CASE OF THE MISSING GANESH #2

Description : This is a multi-player crime fiction game in which players are trying to unravel the mystery of who stole the Ganesh Statue at the festival. The overall strategy of the game involves uncovering the identity of the thief by filtering through a list of characteristics the suspects have and comparing them to those that the thief has. The game begins with everyone gathered around the "festival centre" where the statue of the Ganesh should be. They are told about the missing statue and are given a list of suspects. There are 4 suspects total. They are all characters from the 1000thousand voices book. The players must unscramble and answer incoming SMS word puzzles in order to
A: Gain more insight into who the thief is because the answer to the puzzle will describe a characteristic that he has and
B: to get the next suspect location to pop-up on their map.
The short term goal is to find the next suspect’s house in order to get a summary of his characteristics that compared to the clues given to the player by sms, lead you closer to the thief. Meanwhile you can get witnesses to help you on your way there by giving extra clues as well as ‘descrambling’ tools.

Folk theatre resurgence

Here's an interesting story about a revival in interest for folk theatre in Bengal. They keep it relevant, in the midst of Bollymania, by staging plays that inquire into real-life ethical dilemnas such as capital puinishment. More puppets!
