ARGs and Happiness
Submitted by c_macklin on March 19, 2008 - 12:08pm.I recommend taking a look at Jane McGonigal's closing talk at SXSW, nicely transcribed by Dan Hon. She uses the social issue ARG "World Without Oil" as a case study, and talks about happiness as "the new capital". Interesting reading!

Great Games from GDC 2008
Submitted by c_macklin on February 24, 2008 - 9:23pm.There were some really excellent games shown at the Game Developer's Conference this year, and I had the pleasure of playing many of them! Standouts included "Hush", a game developed by some undergrads at USC eloquently combining the keywords "human rights" and "singing" (using the Values at Play "Grow a Game Cards") Other excellent student games, like the Independent Game Festival overall winner "Crayon Physics Deluxe" can be f

Reblog: On reading
Submitted by c_macklin on February 10, 2008 - 3:53pm.On reading - Doris Lessing's Nobel Prize acceptance speech:
"We are in a fragmenting culture, where our certainties of even a few decades ago are questioned and where it is common for young men and women, who have had years of education, to know nothing of the world, to have read nothing, knowing only some speciality or other...
Very recently, anyone even mildly educated would respect learning, education, and our great store of literature. Of course, we all know that when this happy state was with us, people would pretend to read, would pretend respect for learning. But it is on record that working men and women longed for books, and this is evidenced by the founding of working men's libraries and institutes, the colleges of the 18th and 19th centuries.
REBLOG: Something's Missing From Games for Change
Submitted by c_macklin on November 5, 2007 - 7:44pm.Something's Missing From Games for Change - I believe in games, in their power to entertain, to engage, to inform, and ultimately to effect change. And yet, when it comes to games for change -- which encompass a wide variety of games of a political, environmental, socially conscious and educational nature -- I find I'm getting depressed. Games can teach, and can make players aware of an infinite variety of things and people; it's one thing to read about how to manipulate the vote in a democracy, quite another to gain understand by doing these things, however briefly and virtually. I also believe that while games are frequently more effective teaching tools than textbooks, they need to be more engaging than textbooks, and they are most effective when they don't lecture. But sometimes it seems that rather than playing a game, I'm getting an unending barrage of lectures telling me about so many ills in the world that I can barely get up off the sofa. The cumulative effect, day after day, week after week, of personally exploring things that range from the worst horrors of humanity to the most complex issues of our time, is that I feel overwhelmed, rather than inspired to make change. I... (more)
REBLOG: Reuters, Nokia collaborate on project for reporters on the go
Submitted by c_macklin on November 5, 2007 - 7:38pm.Reuters, Nokia collaborate on project for reporters on the go - Reuters and the Nokia Research Center have announced that they are working on a joint project to enable journalists to file and publish stories and multimedia news content from handheld devices instead of computers. News.com
"Called Reuters Mobile Journalism, the initiative relies upon connecting peripherals to Nokia's high-end Nokia N95 device--a Bluetooth-enabled keyboard, a small tripod for video interviews, and a microphone that can plug into the mobile handset--as well as software to make it easier to put together text, images and streaming media."

Fora.tv
Submitted by c_macklin on October 4, 2007 - 11:11am.I just came across Fora.tv -- which is like youtube for academics -- and ran into some familiar programming from the New School. The excellent presentations of artists David Thorne, Katya Sander, Ashley Hunt, Sharon Hayes and Andrea Geyer for their project "9 Scripts from a Nation at War" is there as is a recent discussion between Ethan Zuckerman, Danah Boyd and Trebor Sholtz around "Democratization and the Networked Public Sphere" I went to both of these and
Returning to the blog
Submitted by c_macklin on October 1, 2007 - 3:46pm.I've decided to get back to blogging to document projects and courses here in the Communication Design and Technology (CDT) program at Parsons, as well as personal research and re-blogged items I think might be of interest to the CDT community and possibly beyond!
This blog also serves as a space for my students in Design and Ethnography to post documentation of their projects. They are all tagged "design and ethnography", and can be found aggregated here.
