Project 1 – Re-Contextualize

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhOdD6Gl1Ts

With this project Dan and I decided to re-contextualize the external space of the city (outdoors) as well as the internal space of the city (indoors). We chose to work with the element of scale by framing the city at a macro level (Manhattan skyline) and zooming into the micro (a chair in an apartment). We chose to split the video into two frames. One started on the chair, as the other started on the Manhattan skyline. In the middle of the video we had the two frames meet at the door of the apartment and allowed to act as a mediator between the internal and external of the city. The concept that we were trying to promote, was the idea that the details/internal of the city is just as much apart of the city, as the Manhattan skyline. With the audio we had the a track with internal sounds playing through one channel and another track with external sounds playing through the other. After the video meets in the middle, we had the two channels swap to accompany each side of the video.

Invisible Cities Project

For this piece, I was looking more at the potentialities of of New York rather than relating it directly to “Invisible Cities”. I wanted to illustrate a literal relationship between the city and it’s transitions through time, motion, cultures, and individuals. As well as incorporating these concepts through the form, I wanted to convey them through my process as well. Starting from the bottom of the page and up, and going with intuition rather than having an ideal outcome, cities change with out notice at times and always need a foundation. Each segment of the drawing is related to an individual and each color represents a culture. My rule set for the design was that two of the same color could not touch unless it was at one of the open spaces with a colored outline. I did this to represent the identities that each individual holds close to themselves in the city but at the same time each ethnic community opens itself up to the city for everyone to engage with.
