Bikes
Against Bush requires no additional technical requirements.
Everything needed for the project is incorporated with the
bicycle. The project includes a laptop embedded in a bicycle
side-bag, a bluetooth-enabled cell phone attached to the handlebars,
a webcam and bluetooth-enabled GPS device attached to the
bicycle frame, and a mechanical printing device attached to
the rear of the bicycle consisting of a series of spray-chalk
aerosol cans.

Users can send messages from
the project website, bikesagainstbush.com, to the cell phone
attached to the bicycle handlebars. Upon receiving the message,
the cyclist can decide whether or not to print the message
by relaying it via bluetooth to the embeeded laptop. When
the laptop receives the message, it triggers an automated
Perl script used to parse the message and send the appropriate
data to the ChalkWriter for printing.

bikesagainstbush.com allows users
to participate in the performance by sending a message to
the bike, but it also allows web users to follow the event
in real-time. The website will utilize a MovableType weblog,
and through the MovableType Perl API, the bike will be able
to create automatic blog entries each time a message is printed.
The entries will include the text of the printed message,
a webcam snapshot, a GPS map image, and a time-stamp of the
moment of printing. The site will also contain additional
information about the project and an archive of all the messages
submitted (including those that are not printed). Below is
a sketch of the website layout:
