make and glue tiles!!!!!!
Make mosaics in asphalt streets! Use linoleum & tile, pictures and words! Good glue! Asphalt crack filler! Tar Paper! As media! YOU!!!!
materials:
- linoleum
(real linoleum, not vinyl flooring. It comes in big expensive rolls, but sometimes you can find free samples. white and bright colors, show up best.)
- tar paper
found in the roofing section. aliases: asphalt paper, felt paper. there's many different kinds, the cheapest one is fine (about $15). it comes in a yard thats a yard tall and about 100 yards long, and will last you and all your tile-gluing friends forever.
- glue
i used elmer's wood glue. it worked fine.
- asphalt crack filler
about $8 for a gallon jug. don't bother with the kind that goes in a caulk gun. smells disgusting and delicious at the same time.
- scissors, xacto knife, box cutter
a combination of the three will be helpful, since scissors are easiest but impossible for negative space, box cutter for simple negative space, xacto for fine detail. i had the amazingly awesome opportunity to use a laser cutter, but you definitely don't NEED one. (the circle a design on this page was done by cutting the grey linoleum with scissors, and scoring and breaking the red VCT)

i got most of my info from the
Asphalt Mosaics chapter in
Recipes for Disaster.
Someone typed up the article in question, which is awesome, but if you've got 12 bucks to spare, the book is worth picking up.
