Concept:
Sock Orchestra conceptually came about when a representative from xstatic cam to visit us and provided us with some swag. Mike, Kyle, and I sat down after the presentation and noticed that not only are the socks conductive, but they have a 6 ohm resistance from front to back, making it a large surface potentiometer. Perfect for a wearable midi controller!
Precedent:
This project is steeped in hack and midi culture and it follows a lineage back to circuit bending geeks. Like Mister Resistor, and the ever popular atari midi synth by Paul Slocum
and as far as wearable midi is concerned
I love the Wah Wah boots and the Drum Pants Projects
Iterations:
The image below is iteration 1. I used conductive snaps and thread to maximize the efficiency of the conductive contact patch. Each sock a has 6 ohms of resistance, and with the attachments at the heels it gives me 12 ohms total resistance from a toe to toe connection. I fed the analog data into an Arduino board and then programmed it to output a four octave range to an 8 ohm speaker based on the resistance input.

The image below is iteration 2. This is the professional musician version of the first phase prototype. Everything is essentially the same but containers have been added to jazz up the theatrical qualities of the setup, and 1/4" audio cables serve as the data transfer from the socks as well as to the mini amplifier which replaces the crappy 8 ohm speaker.

According to an article in New York Magazine, the generation currently coming of age is in the middle of a sea change in terms of their opinions (and even their cognition) of privacy.
My Betrayal Jewelry earring is a "design for debate", to use Anthony Dunne's term and approach. The earring is an artifact from a future in which people no longer feel anxiety about exposing their most intimate physical details to the public. What will the knowledge do to the observer? How will that observation reflect back upon the wearer? For example, will the wearer, as in the case of today's youth on social network sites, feel they are constantly performing for an invisible public? The earring hopes to spark that debate.
Below is a video of the earring in action. Notice how displeased I am to be wearing it--I am clearly not of the generation that would find this to be an acceptable breach of their personal data.

::first vital sign
PONGVEST is a portable game vest that transforms a man's phenomenon into a fun and interactive game experience.
Does it really matter where you play the game? Will the context enhances, or subverts the game experience? It is going to be a mixture of all. My vital sign for this first assignment is human gesture and the particular one I am looking into is men's most mysterious phenomenon-"nipple grabbing." In my participant observation, grabbing each other's nipples is an interesting activity among men. They are sensitive; they are weak; They are the best targets for a friendly attack. It is usually the last minute enhancement to a joyful picture of close friendship. We've seen this happened countless time among us so now it is time to spicy it up! PONG is hands down the best solution to this project. Despite the fact that PONG is the best example for a paddle controller game, this historical landmark symbolizes the beginning of our body as a playground.

Instead of detecting a vital sign and have the wearable react to it passively I want the wearable to take over the initiation and then trigger the vital sign. Jennifer's Intimate Controller will not become an intimate wearable until the interaction begins when the players touch the predesignated buttons in their underwear. (This reverse process also applies to most of the sensorless LED garments.)

Jennifer Chowdhury, the mind behind what is either the stupidest or the greatest idea of all time, started by making a bra into a paddle controller. Touching the left breast made the paddle go left, and touching the right one made it go right. Building off of that, she came up with the controllers that has six different sensors in it, and for the fellas there's a set of boxer shorts with another six sensors.

C.D.E. Design wise, I look into works by Joesph Beuys, Lee Bontecou, and Issey Miyake. I want to bring out the awareness of a piece of cloth and the three dimensional aspect of it.
