TEACHINGAndrea Dezsö, a visual artist and writer was born and raised in Transylvania, Romania and is ethnic Hungarian.
Dezsö creates psychological, historical and deeply personal narratives that include images and constructions from childhood, memories of growing up under communism. Dezsö makes drawings; small, densely worked up one-of-a-kind artist's books; intricate, multi-layered paper cutouts; embroidery; sculpture; installation; animation and large-scale murals.
Dezsö's work work was shown at the Museum of Arts & Design and the Jack Tilton Gallery in New York, The New York Armory Show and Art Basel Miami Beach and reviewed in ArtForum, The New York Times, The Village Voice, The Wall Street Journal, NPR, New York magazine, Print and Marie-Claire. Her writing appeared in McSweeney’s, Print and Esopus. A book about Dezsö's art, creative process and obsessions titled “Andrea Dezsö: Fetish Book” was published in 2006.
Dezsö is the recipient of a 2009 Kohler Arts & Industry Fellowship, a 2008 Kamiyama, Japan Fellowship, a 2007 NYFA Fellowship, a 2007 Six Points Fellowship and the Ucross Foundation’s 2005 Lois Nellie Gill Award for Female Visual Artist of Exceptional Merit. She is Assistant Professor of Media Design at Parsons The New School for Design in New York City.
