This is Kind of Awkward is a suite of socially awkward wearables, which explores how clothing and accessories serve as technological mediators between people. Through the use of exaggeration and by employing elements of critical design, the project aims to better understand social interactions between strangers. Studies on gesture, proxemics, and fashion further influenced this investigation of the unwritten code of stranger conduct to which so many of us feel beholden. Each piece is performative in nature, and not intended for mass production. All are gender non-specific, perform a single function, address a different type of stranger interaction, and evoke a sense of play in their mocking of human awkwardness.
