cube bits

Cube bits is a toy for kids 4-6 years old. I am constructing this tool as my thesis project for my MFA degree in Design and Technology at Parsons School of Design.

Cube Bits is a system composed of a software unit and a hardware unit. The hardware unit has three hysical objects that create input in the software application: a solid cube and solid 90° triangle; and a table top grid that mirrors the software application. Along with these two units, a printed guide book is provided with a series of examples of possible combinations that can be created in the software application.

It allows children to construct compositions of forms by placing the solid geometric objects on top of the table top grid to fill in the squares that are displayed in the screen´s grid.

Abstract: The Use of a Digitally Augmented Space to Discover Geometric and Art Expressions

Cube Bits proposes a software-hardware toy for young children's exploration of basic geometry and art forms. The design of Cube Bits creates an innovative, physically-augmented space, which explores an important aspect of active learning: the environment and its physical dimensions. The digitally-augmented space shifts from the traditional desktop educational software by allowing physical engagement with the objects in space. It is a home-based solution, using a table-top grid, a series of two-inch cubes and a series of two-inch 90° degree triangles.

As an exploratory toy for children 4 and 6 years of age, this tool provides an informal framework for the child's construction of logic, reasoning, concepts of comparison and cause and effect. Children can also experience a variety of different activities that range from constructing simple forms to creating complex combinations of forms.
